It's well known in trapping circles that using hazing can significantly improve trap effectiveness by guiding animals into the trap. It's frustrating to watch footage of animals walking past traps, no matter how good the bait. Good hazing can improve trapping effectiveness in the same way that trawling for fish is a lot more effective than fishing with a line. Dr James Ross from the Department of Pest Management and Conservation at Lincoln University recommends hazing to improve trap effectiveness.

Often trappers use any existing features and material that is around the trap as hazing. This hessian hazing is ready made for the job:

  • Double layered, biodegradable hessian
  • Rope sown into the top to allow you to tension the fence and tie it down
  • Eyelets for attaching to posts - recommend pigtail posts (sold separately)
  • Bottoms strengthened for pegging to ground
  • 0.9m high - comes in 25m lengths. You can cut it into shorter lengths if required. We have tried using lengths of up to 100m, but also as short as 5m.

We've designed this to be easy to put up and robust. We've seen this hazing guide animals into un-baited traps.

As well as the posts you will also need to buy pegs to secure the bottom of the hazing. We recommend short pegs for hard ground, or long pegs for softer ground. The hazing can also be stapled to existing fencing.

This is obviously not a predator proof fence - but our testing has shown that most animals will walk around the hazing rather than expend the energy to jump over it or go under it.
