Improved waterproofing for the DOC AI Cam

Water is tricky. To our surprise we found we were still occasionally get cameras returned with water damage, despite our recent improvements (new seal, new cases, additional breather holes). The good news is we have been able to find out how the water got into the camera with a new test and devised a fix that passes the test.

We suspected water was coming into the camera after it had been hot and then cooled down with heavy rain. The cooling would cause the air inside the camera to contract and cause pressure to suck water in, from the outside. To replicate this we first submerged the camera in hot water, observed air bubble coming out (as expected) as the air inside the camera expanded. We then submerged the camera in cold water and found that significant water could get into the body of the camera via the lens. This is a very harsh test and is a higher standard than we were originally designing the camera to.

The lens had been secured to the case with an adhesive that, in hindsight, was insufficient. We have replaced this with an adhesive seal that is used on car windscreens.

We redid the test and the camera was bone dry inside. For our existing customers we are offering to add this new lens seal at no cost. Please send us your cameras and we will get them back to you as soon as possible.
